What is Tirzepatide?
Tirzepatide (development code LY3298176) is a synthetic peptide developed by Eli Lilly. It is a “dual agonist” — it activates both the GLP-1 and GIP receptors, the two main incretin pathways involved in blood-sugar regulation and appetite signalling.
Mechanism
By engaging GLP-1 and GIP together, tirzepatide is studied for effects on glucose handling, satiety signalling and body composition — a step beyond single-receptor GLP-1 research.
What the research shows
Tirzepatide has been through large clinical programmes (the SURPASS and SURMOUNT trials), with significant effects on blood glucose and body weight, and is approved overseas (marketed as Mounjaro / Zepbound) for type-2 diabetes and obesity. Research continues to expand.
