What “reconstitution” means
Reconstitution is simply dissolving the freeze-dried peptide powder into a liquid so it can be handled and measured in the lab. The standard solvent for research handling is bacteriostatic water (sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which limits microbial growth over repeated use).
General handling steps
- Bring vials to room temperature before opening, to reduce condensation.
- Add the solvent slowly – direct bacteriostatic water down the inside wall of the vial rather than straight onto the powder.
- Do not shake. Let the powder dissolve on its own, or swirl gently. Peptides are delicate and agitation can degrade them.
- Keep it sterile – wipe the stopper with alcohol and use clean technique throughout.
Storage after reconstitution
Lyophilised (unreconstituted) peptides are typically stored frozen and are stable long-term. Once reconstituted, they are generally kept refrigerated and used within a shorter window. Always keep material out of direct light and away from repeated temperature swings.
