How to Reconstitute Research Peptides: A Lab Handling Guide

Research peptides are supplied as a lyophilised (freeze-dried) powder and are reconstituted in the laboratory before use. This guide covers the general handling steps – as laboratory procedure, for research use only.

What “reconstitution” means

Reconstitution is simply dissolving the freeze-dried peptide powder into a liquid so it can be handled and measured in the lab. The standard solvent for research handling is bacteriostatic water (sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which limits microbial growth over repeated use).

General handling steps

  1. Bring vials to room temperature before opening, to reduce condensation.
  2. Add the solvent slowly – direct bacteriostatic water down the inside wall of the vial rather than straight onto the powder.
  3. Do not shake. Let the powder dissolve on its own, or swirl gently. Peptides are delicate and agitation can degrade them.
  4. Keep it sterile – wipe the stopper with alcohol and use clean technique throughout.

Storage after reconstitution

Lyophilised (unreconstituted) peptides are typically stored frozen and are stable long-term. Once reconstituted, they are generally kept refrigerated and used within a shorter window. Always keep material out of direct light and away from repeated temperature swings.
