Melanotan-2 is one of the most recognised melanocortin research peptides. This guide explains what it is, how it is studied, and how it differs from Melanotan-1.
What is Melanotan-2?
Melanotan-2 (MT-2) is a synthetic analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). In research it is characterised by its activity across several melanocortin receptors, and it has been widely used as a tool compound in melanocortin-system studies.
Melanotan-1 vs Melanotan-2
Melanotan-1 (afamelanotide) is more selective for the MC1R receptor, while Melanotan-2 is broader-acting across the melanocortin family. The choice between them depends on the receptor focus of the research.
How it is studied
MT-2 is examined in research on melanocortin-receptor signalling. We present this purely as a mechanism of scientific study and make no claims about any effect in humans. It shares the melanocortin pathway with PT-141.
Forms & handling
Supplied as a lyophilised (freeze-dried) powder in sealed vials, reconstituted with bacteriostatic water for research use — see the reconstitution guide. Store sealed vials cool and out of direct light; refrigerate reconstituted solutions.
Why third-party testing matters
Research is only as reliable as the material behind it. Every batch we stock undergoes independent third-party analysis, and we publish the results so purity and identity can be verified rather than assumed. See our independent lab testing and HPLC purity testing.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Melanotan-1 and Melanotan-2?
Melanotan-1 (afamelanotide) is more MC1R-selective; Melanotan-2 acts across a broader range of melanocortin receptors.
What receptors does Melanotan-2 act on?
In research it is studied for activity across melanocortin receptors (the MCR family).
Is Melanotan-2 for human use?
No. Supplied strictly for laboratory research use, not for human or animal consumption.
